Asturias

The region of Asturias is located on the north coast of Spain in the Bay of Biscay. The province lies between the mountains on the Picos de Europe and the sea and is often called 'Green Spain' being more temperate and wet than most of Spain. The provincial capital is Oviedo.

The Picos de Europe mountains rise some 7,500 feet and have contributed to the provinces unique climate and its cultural heritage. It was for centuries the only part of Spain not to fall to the Moorish invasion from North Africa. Today it is a National Park providing many outdoor activities to locals and tourists.

One of the symbols of the province is the horreo or granary. These square structures, raised from the ground on stone or wooden pillars were used in the past to store grain away from damp or rodents. Many have now been converted to out-houses in urban areas.

Asturias has much in common with the traditional Celtic areas on the Atlantic coast such as Britanny, Wales, Ireland and the west coast of Scotland. One of their traditions, which we have in Scotland, is playing the bagpipe. Indeed, the city of Gijon has a splendid bagpipe museum.

One of the traditional meals of Asturias which really must be tried is Fabada. It consists of large beans, pork, bacon and chorizos (type of sausage) together with garlic, onion and spices.

It is often accompanied by the famous Asturian cider.

The spectacular location of the Basilica of Covandonga is the spiritual heart of Asturias. It became a symbol of resistance against Moorish domination and the Battle of Covandonga represented the start of Christian reconquest of Spain.

In a large cave in the mountain is the shrine to the Virgin of Covadonga, or La Santina the patron saint of Asturias.

The Holy Cave in the Monte Auseva is reached by a staircase of 100 steps which many pilgrims ascend on their knees.

A tunnel in the rock contains the tomb of the victor at Covadonga Don Pelayo and leads to the Basilica.

Oviedo

Lorna is spending her year abroad studying at Oviedo University (opposite). The origins of the city date from 761 A.D., when a Benedictine monastery was founded there. It continued to be predominant in religion and art through the Middle Ages. It is now a pleasant, cosmopolitan city with attractive buildings and parks.

Oviedo Cathedral, which was completed in the 16th century is the architectural pride of the city. It stands on the site of an 8th century church and has a huge diversity of architectural styles. The Camara Santa, or Holy Chamber contains a number of relics brought from Toledo in southern Spain.

The Gothic Tower has been particularly admired by tourists and in the 15th century cloister, is the Museum of the Church of Asturias.

On Monte Naranco, overlooking Oviedo, are two impressive 9th century churches.

The first, Santa Maria del Naranco, was built in 848A.D. as the palace of King Ramiro II but was converted to a church in the 12th century.

The second church is San Miguel de Lillo, also consecrated in 848 A.D.

It is characterised by its great height and by its windows, which have been carved ornately in stone.

Gijon

Gijon is the largest city in Asturias with a population of 250,000. It is mainly a maritime and industrial city, but played an important part in Roman times.

It lies on the beautiful Asturian coast, with many attractive coves and villages nearby.

The beach of San Lorenzo in Gijon is popular with tourists and locals alike. In the distance is the Church of san Pedro and nearby are old Roman baths.

Our good friends Ricardo and Blanca live here and have provided Lorna with ' a second home'.
